MLK DAY Promotes Community Service
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Martin Luther King Day, I joined volunteer groups and demonstrated my public relations skills by producing a video that encapsulated MLK Day through a multimedia presentation of video interviews, digital photography, music, and graphics.
The final product demonstrated that I had a solid understanding of best practices in the field of public relations by highlighting these skills.
Social:
- forged relationships between stakeholders such as UMass Dartmouth, Leduc Center for Civic Engagement, SouthCoast Serves, Gifts To Give, and community volunteers
- demonstrated interview skills and fact gathering of information to crystallize into a final polished video production
- promoted UMass Dartmouth as one of the elite universities engaged in civic affairs and community service
- demonstrated leadership and social responsibility by tackling issues related to poverty and homelessness
Technological:
- used industry standard technology such as Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Video, and Photography to employ digital storytelling techniques
- produced deliverables in a public relations setting that normally gets outsourced by agencies
- re-purposed materials by posting on different media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, WordPress, Vimeo, Twitter, and the UMass Dartmouth website
Commitment to Public Service
Almost 50% of American children live in poor or low income households. In the spirit of Dr. King, volunteers donated “gently used” clothes, toys, and books to Gifts To Give. In a former textile mill in New Bedford Massachusetts, volunteers cleaned the items and donated them back to children in need.
Through volunteerism and a shared vision, we transformed our community into a better place.
